"Possession" by Ashkan Honarvar & Claudia Crobatia
Written by Trippe
Wednesday, 14 August 2013 17:06

Collage artist Ashkan Honarvar (1980, Iran) and photgrapher Claudia Crobatia (1984, the Netherlands) emailed over a recent photo collage project entitled Possession. We explored the idea of a possessed cat through visualizing unknown forces that deform an animals physical form and behavior. The concept of possession came out of our interest in human relationships with their pets, which sometimes tend to become slightly obsessive, no matter how lovingly.

Besides this series, be sure to check out their sites for great collage work and photography: Ashkan Honarvar - Claudia Crobatia

Freddy Sam Philly Mural
Written by Van Edwards
Wednesday, 14 August 2013 10:38

Through The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program South African artist Ricky Lee Gordon, aka Freddy Sam, completed a mural at 161 Cecil B. Moore in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood. The mural, titled Together Moving Mountains, was completed with the help of one of our art education classes, made up primarily of students from Sayre High School.

The mural shows a springbok (a species of antelope) drinking from a river with a ribbon of the students' geometric patterns at ground level beneath the scene. Freddy Sam's work often features South African animals and scenes from nature.

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to see a mural going up on a big wall in the parking lot on 15th & Harrison in downtown Oakland. I stopped by throughout the day and snapped some photos of the progress. The mural is a collaboration by Chicago based artists, Clam Nation, Nice One, Lady Lucx, and Espir. It looks great, stop by and check it out.

Press Release (+Click to expand)

FFDG is pleased to present San Francisco based painters and husband and wife duo Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall in their second two person show with the gallery entitled “Loading” featuring new mixed media paintings inspired by the transfer of information as recontextualized through the artists unique and personal filter. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, August 16th (7-10pm). Beer and wine will be available.

With minds fine-tuned to the perception of millisecond delays, seconds feel like infinities; a slow network is a robbery of our precious messages, instant pictures, the tenuous threads that connect us, that when severed, make us ever so nervous, scared, if not very very angry. These moments between are indeed a disquieting reality check. To be inaccessible or to be kept waiting is almost to die.

In this instant culture, we look at who is selling, who is buying, and what a search actually is: a reach of a skeleton, waiting to be fleshed in with missing lyrics, skin, muscles, bones. At the end of it all are our ever-hungry hands and eyes, starving for the result of a search sequence, the next delivery to add to our lives, the next bit of like for the status update of one of too many personae; we are always searching and forever loading.

“Loading” is Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock’s wry take on the recent Bay Area tech explosion; a follow up to 2012’s FFDG “Edible Complex” exhibition; a study of San Francisco’s food culture.

About Ferris Plock & Kelly Tunstall

The experimental yet classically grounded work of Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall lives comfortably in a space between graphic expression, stylized representation, surrealism, and sketch. Their preferred medium is a combination of acrylic, collage, spray paint, pencil, pen and ink, gold leaf. The binary contrast of masculine and feminine as the major theme in their work is also a very real and personal visual conversation between their imagined realities. Enhanced by complex, delicate layers, their bold pieces exist not only as individual pieces, but as part of larger installations or site-specific works.

Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock live and paint in San Francisco with their two sons. They have exhibited extensively locally, nationally, and internationally both together and separately. Plock and Tunstall recently completed a landmark commission for San Francisco’s Michelin-starred restaurant, SPQR. Tunstall also completed a major body of work to be on view permanently at Oakland’s A16. Tunstall and Plock have worked or are currently working with the San Francisco Arts Commission on their Passport initiative.

Ala Ebtekar creating a major space for himself in the contemporary art world
Written by Rachel Ralph
Thursday, 08 August 2013 11:17

Working with concepts surrounding narrative, crews, pattern, and mythology, Ala Ebtekar is creating a major space for himself in the contemporary art world. We featured Ebtekar in an interview back in 2007 and we wanted to see what he's been up to since then. With his participation in three major exhibitions right now (Migrating Identities at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Proximities: What Time is it There? at The Asian Art Museum, and Faux Real at The Laguna Art Museum) there's clearly an interest in his work, and we're intrigued.

Written by Rachel Ralph - rachel(at)fecalface.com

Work in process at the Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

Absent Arrival series

I was fortunate to meet with Ebtekar at YBCA a few weeks ago, where he walked me through his work with great detail. (We also talked extensively about his personal background, but much of that can be found in our previous interview).

He and his work are very genuine and he takes as much care in his discussion of it as in its creation. Beginning in the first gallery of the exhibition, we talked about his large-scale, muted, figurative Absent Arrival paintings. These works are so subtle that you have to see them in person, and you have to get close to do so. The paintings emphasize his interest in the "crew" as they juxtapose crews of Iranian wrestlers with hip-hop b-boy crews. He has a personal archive of photographs of crews, but the purpose of the poses here is not to emphasize the similarities between the two cultures, but rather to explore their symmetry and the temporal and physical spaces they open up. These spaces become a portal to something else; through a combination of history and presence, these works open to an undefined reality beyond. Later reflecting on his work, Ebtekar noticed the similarity here to the Indian Sri Yantra, a symbol that combines triangles and guides meditation through its center. Like the Sri Yantra, Ebtekar's wrestlers and b-boys create shapes that provide transcendence to viewers, and allows them to look beyond the surface of the paintings to provide them with a cultural meditation.

Here's a little peak at Adam Feibelman's forthcoming show A Lot of People Do This which opens on Saturday, the 10th at San Francisco's Guerrero Gallery.

His current body of work is comprised of enamel paintings created from meticulously cut multi-layer paper stencils and corresponding sewn stencil collages. Feibelman studied at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA, where he earned the Yojo Hamaguchi award for exceptional achievement in Printmaking. He graduated with distinction in 2001, with a double major in Printmaking and Illustration. He is currently represented by Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco, CA.

See photos of his last year's show as well as our 2010 studio visit which gives insight into Adam's art making process.

Fresh Flaneurs - Street Art in Italy

We would normally rewrite the email from Vittorio Parisi and put the whole thing in our vernacular, but to be honest, we have to catch a flight to the East Coast in a couple hours, Poo (our cat) has to be attended to before our trip and errands need to be ran... So, in Vittorio's words below, check out this great street art show running in Italy and hear his issues.

If you like what you see and read, be sure to lend your support by leaving a comment at the bottom of the post. This will help ensure events like this continue not just in Italy but in other cities around the world.

This great event features works by Eltono, 108, Sten & Lex, Hell’O Monsters, SamIII, and Ozmo

Fabiano Rodrigues Self Portraits

When we were down in Sao Paulo, Brazil a couple years back (photos), we had the pleasure of meeting ex-professional skater/ photographer Fabiano Rodrigues who's represented by the fine folks at LOGO gallery there in Sau Paulo.

Fabiano Rodrigues takes these great self portraits using a Hasselblad camera and a remote control while skating in his newest series... skating inside/ outside museums and around Sao Paulo... These photographs are always one off prints, exploring the history and repertoire of skateboarding movements, particularly its relationship with the city, its architecture and urban furniture. In his choices of locations, there is a special interest for architectural landmarks, such as buildings designed by the renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.

The Vans US Open of Surfing just kicked off last weekend in Huntington Beach (PHOTOS), and droves of folks cruised down to check out the surfing, bmx, and skate action in events such as, Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational and the Van Doren Invitational. Like Van's Supply & Demand show at the House of Vans, Russ Pope invited down a team of awesome artists -Rich Jacobs, Nate Russell, Mike Giant, Matt French and Zio Ziegler - do a collaborative mural in the skate bowl, which was modeled after the legendary Marseilles France Skate Park. Also artists Gregg Kaplan, HEF, and Marco Zamora were also in attendance, working on painting large shipping containers inspired by the classic Vans shoeboxes.

The Vans US Open of Surfing runs from July 20th thru July 28th, with event such as the Van Doren Invitational (skate contest) and the Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational on Saturday, July 27th and Sunday, July 28th. Anyhow, here's some photos I took from Day 1 of the artists working on the skate bowl! PHOTOS

LUDO & The Quiet Streets of Paris

LUDO emailed a recent work on the streets of Paris. He writes, it's cut, painted at my studio with acrylic, then organized by numbers on some kind of grid to not get lost with all the rolls..

When asked if it's a legal piece, well... let's just say the city is quiet as many Parisians are out enjoying their summer holiday, and it only took one day with a cherry picker.

Jacob Dahlstrup's Cosmographicum
Written by Trippe
Wednesday, 24 July 2013 10:04

Jacob Dahlstrup who's based in Copenhagen and represented by Munch Gallery in NYC, emailed over a few examples from his newest series Cosmographicum which showed last month at Galleri Christoffer Egelund (Copenhagen).

The works come to life in a unique intersection between the fascination of outer space, "cosmos" and the concept of drawing or mapping "graphicum". In motifs as well as scale the works represents a wide range of expressions, from small intensely detailed studies of the surface of the moon to grand dramatic celestial explosions. The interest in cosmos has also been featured in Dahlstrups earlier works where e.g. Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler has been the center of attention. With this exhibition the artist aimes his spotlight at the space adventures of modern times with imaginative narrative references to the well know images of e.g. the moon landing and the entire Apollo space program.

Street Artists POBEL in Denmark

Henrik, who shoots us over a lot of art related goodies from his native Denmark, continues with some goodies from POBEL.

This time around I'm writing to share my shots of four new major works by Pobel, which he has created at the Public Art event in Horsens - which I have co-curated and co-organized (and shooting of course). All of these works is located at the port and as you can see, we once again needed some large machines to do some of the works! The idea behind the two "MUTE"-sign pieces is that they created a lot of noise in real life, but the photos is muted.

I don't think at this point it needs to be written since the last update to Fecal Face was a long time ago, but...

I, John Trippe, have put this baby Fecal Face to bed. I'm now focusing my efforts on running ECommerce at DLX which I'm very excited about... I guess you can't take skateboarding out of a skateboarder.

It was a great 15 years, and most of that effort can still be found within the site. Click around. There's a lot of content to explore.

Hit me up if you have any ECommerce related questions. - trippe.io

The Death of the Artist—and the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:34

When works of art become commodities and nothing else, when every endeavor becomes “creative” and everybody “a creative,” then art sinks back to craft and artists back to artisans—a word that, in its adjectival form, at least, is newly popular again. Artisanal pickles, artisanal poems: what’s the difference, after all? So “art” itself may disappear: art as Art, that old high thing. Which—unless, like me, you think we need a vessel for our inner life—is nothing much to mourn.

Hard-working artisan, solitary genius, credentialed professional—the image of the artist has changed radically over the centuries. What if the latest model to emerge means the end of art as we have known it? --continue reading

NYPD told to carry spray paint to cover graffiti
Wednesday, 21 May 2014 10:37

nyc_graffitiNYC --- A new graffiti abatement program put forth by the police commissioner has beat cops carrying cans of spray paint to fill in and cover graffiti artists work in an effort to clean up the city --> Many cops are thinking it's a waste of resources, but we're waiting to see someone make a project of it. Maybe instructions for the cops on where to fill-in?

The NYPD is arming its cops with cans of spray paint and giving them art-class-style lessons to tackle the scourge of urban graffiti, The Post has learned.

Shootings are on the rise across the city, but the directive from Police Headquarters is to hunt down street art and cover it with black, red and white spray paint, sources said... READ ON

Alison Blickle @NYC's Kravets Wehby Gallery

Los Angeles based Alison Blickle who showed here in San Francisco at Eleanor Harwood last year (PHOTOS) recently showed new paintings in New York at Kravets Wehby Gallery. Lovely works.

Interview w/ Kevin Earl Taylor

We haven't been featuring many interviews as of late. Let's change that up as we check in with a few local San Francisco artists like Kevin Earl Taylor here whom we studio visited back in 2009 (PHOTOS & VIDEO). It's been awhile, Kevin...

Peter Gronquist @The Shooting Gallery

If you like guns and boobs, head on over to the Shooting Gallery; just don't expect the work to be all cheap ploys and hot chicks. With Make Stuff by Peter Gronquist (Portland) in the main space and Morgan Slade's Snake in the Eagle's Shadow in the project space, there is plenty spectacle to be had, but if you look just beyond it, you might actually get something out of the shows.

Jay Bo at Hamburg's Circle Culture

Berlin based Jay Bo recently held a solo show at Hamburg's Circle Culture featuring some of his most recent paintings. We lvoe his work.

NYCHOS @Fifty24SF

Fifty24SF opened Street Anatomy, a new solo show by Austrian artist Nychos a week ago last Friday night. He's been steadily filling our city with murals over the last year, with one downtown on Geary St. last summer, and new ones both in the Haight and in Oakland within the last few weeks, but it was really great to see his work up close and in such detail.

GOLD BLOOD, MAGIC WEIRDOS

Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne played host to a huge group exhibition a couple of weeks back, with "Gold Blood, Magic Weirdos" Curated by Melbourne artist Sean Morris. Gold Blood brought together 25 talented painters, illustrators and comic artists from Australia, the US, Singapore, England, France and Spain - and marked the end of the Magic Weirdos trilogy, following shows in Perth in 2012 and London in 2013.

John Felix Arnold III on the Road to NYC

Well, John Felix Arnold III is at it again. This time, he and Carolyn LeBourgios packed an entire show into the back of a Prius and drove across the country to install it at Superchief Gallery in NYC. I met with him last week as he told me about the trip over delicious burritos at Taqueria Cancun (which is right across the street from FFDG and serves what I think is the best burrito in the city) as the self proclaimed "Only overweight artist in the game" spilled all the details.

FRENCH in Melbourne

London based illustrator FRENCH recently held a show of new works at the Melbourne based Mild Manners

Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF

Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Mario Wagner @Hashimoto

Mario Wagner (Berkeley) opened his new solo show A Glow that Transfers Creativity last Saturday night at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art

The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

NYCHOS Mural on Ashbury and Haight

NYCHOS completed this great new mural on the corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco on Tuesday. Looks Amazing.

Sun Milk in Vienna

With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Inspired by the many historical artists who have longed similar longings I discovered the beauty of artist residencies. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding

Titled "How To Lose Yourself Completely (The September Issue)", it consists of a copy of the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine (the issue they made the documentary about) with all faces masked with a sharpie, and everything else entirely whited out. 840 pages of fun. -Bryan Schnelle

The Marsh Barge - Traveling the Mississippi River from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to quit my job, move out of my house, leave everything and travel again. So on August 21, 2013 I pushed a canoe packed full of gear into the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, along with four of my best friends. Exactly 100 days later, I arrived at a marina near the Gulf of Mexico in a sailboat.
