Sean McFarland and Jake Longstreth @Ever Gold
Written by Trippe
Tuesday, 11 March 2014 10:25

Sean McFarland (SF) and Jake Longstreth (LA) opened their new show at Ever Gold Gallery last Thursday night (PHOTOS).

In the frenzy of spring and approaching warmer weather, this incredibly subtle show is a nice break from the chaos. It's like a peaceful stroll through an empty park, filled with pastels and serene environments. It was surprising just how much differentiation these guys could get into such a small space with such minimal work, but they managed to show paintings, photographs and even a projection in the small back room. It's definitely worth a peek if you're in the downtown area over the next couple of weeks.

'W.O.W. (What Once Was)'
Works by Max Rippon
February 22nd - March 22nd
AF Gallery. Lichtstrasse 26-28, Cologne, Germany
Our friend Max Rippon (aka RIPO) is currently showing these wonderful wood and canvas works focused on his love of type through the lens of the fundamental transience of modern life that we're all setting goals for upgrades (PHOTOS).

"The basic fact of modern life... 'All that is solid melts into air.'" - Marshall Berman

We cannot stop. We must move forward. Growth. Expansion. Progress. Evolution. We don't yearn for less friends, a smaller house, a smaller bank account, less notoriety. The goals we set are for streamlining our upgrades, building on and in turn making obsolete what it was we craved and loved only yesterday.

Kerry Miller @The Shooting Gallery
Written by Rachel Ralph
Friday, 14 February 2014 12:26

SAN FRANCISCO --- Kerry Miller's (UK) deconstructed books are fascinating. In her new body of work, Re-Imagination of the Book now running at The Shooting Gallery through March 8th, she does just that - re-imagines old and discarded books into newly complex works of art.

The books seem simple enough, they are just cut pages layered on one another, but they are so intricate they can draw your attention for hours, much like the words in the books themselves. Most of the crowd was gathered in the front galleries, like moths to bright colors, but I have a feeling that those who made it to the back were glad they did. These books provide some contrast to the paintings and crochet installation in the front and really bring minute details into focus. Go check them out before the show closes on March 8th.

Olek & Jet Martinez at White Walls
Written by Rachel Ralph
Tuesday, 11 February 2014 11:07

Get to White Walls to see Olek's (from Poland, living in New York) new installation, I Haven't a Single Explorer on My Planet (PHOTOS) as soon as you can; it is awesome. She completely covered the interior of what used to be an office at White Walls from floor to ceiling and back again with brightly-crochet. Patterns of camouflage, butterflies, and flowers intertwine to create an immersive environment and the bright colors which was much appreciated during this very rainy past weekend. Everyone left the room with a smile, and I cannot say enough good things about this work.

The good vibes extended through the rest of the gallery as well with the opening of local artist Jet Martinez's City of Eternal Springtime (PHOTOS). This show was fittingly titled, not only because each piece is primarily of flowers, but also because flowers seem to be blooming everywhere in this city on any given day, just like his murals. (He also hails from Cuernavaca, Mexico "Land of Eternal Springtime.) I was surprised with the amount of variation he was able to achieve through such a consistent theme, and each piece differentiates color and the distance of the lines from one another, giving them very different effects. The crowd seemed to be enjoying the work, and it was a great reminder that even though it may be soggy now, spring it just around the corner.

Louis M. Schmidt @Park Life
Written by Rachel Ralph
Monday, 27 January 2014 12:47

SAN FRANCISCO --- The nomadic Louis M. Schmidt opened his new show of drawings, entitled Cy Twombly Death's Head last Friday night at Park Life in the Richmond to a small but local crowd (we'll just say the bucket of beer didn't seem to be disappearing quickly) (PHOTOS).

These large, meticulous works on paper are an art history nerd's dream. Patterns calling Donald Judd a fascist are hilarious and a death's head of Cy Twombly (who is complete irrelevant to the images otherwise) is a great spark for an imagination.

I was personally very attracted to the pieces with more distinct patterns in them, and I kept wanting to take them off the wall and turn them sideways and upside down to see the different visual effects. Enhanced by the sheen of the graphite, these drawings are endlessly interesting to look at, even though they are completely devoid of color or (some of the time) figurative content. This show is very enjoyable, and you could get lost in the drawings and the quiet of Clement for hours.

Ever Gold 5th Anniversary
Written by Trippe
Friday, 24 January 2014 13:28
SAN FRANCISCO --- The Ever Gold Gallery deserves a major congratulations on the opening of their new show, celebrating the fifth anniversary of the gallery (PHOTOS).

With work from tons of artists, they somehow managed to balance the amount of work with the small space and it felt perfect. There was a diverse range of mediums, from film to paint to sculpture and fiber, and it helped show the breadth of the gallery's work over the last five years. It was packed full of people and therefore very hot inside, but it was filled with excitement that spilled out into the street.

This is definitely a show worth checking out, and has work from several Bay Area artists, supporting the local scene. Congrats, Ever Gold, I can't wait to see what the next five years brings you.

Supersonic Electronic @Spoke Art
Written by Rachel Ralph
Wednesday, 22 January 2014 10:46

Spoke Art opened their annual Supersonic Electronic (PHOTOS) show last Thursday night to a packed crowd. The work spilled from their original gallery space into the new space they have acquired two doors down, and it allowed for as much viewing space as was possible, as the show was not only full of people, but works by over forty artists.

Curated by Zach Tutor, this was the third installment of Supersonic Electronic at the gallery and this year's grouping provided a cohesive experience, albeit strictly two-dimensional, as each piece operated together fludily. Many of the artists displayed are regulars at the gallery and if painting and drawing are your thing, take the time to check out this show. With this many works, you are sure to not be disappointed.

Tracy Snelling & Marci Washington @Rena Bransten Gallery
Written by Trippe
Tuesday, 21 January 2014 10:44

I literally stumbled into the Rena Bransten Gallery last Thursday night, and I'm sure glad I did (PHOTOS). Whereas other galleries in 77 Geary were holding openings for first Thursday, Rena Bransten opened Tracy Snelling's Mystery Hour and Marci Washington's Sleeping Spell a few weeks earlier, on December 19th.

Both of these Bay Area-based artists embraced a sense of horror with these works, and while they may not have been scary, they sure were inviting. I'm glad I got to be in the gallery alone as it was easy to approach Snelling's work and look into the windows of her haunted houses, each of which encased a small screen playing clips from films. Creating these doll-sized renditions, complete with movement and sound from the screens, requires viewers to get close and really look at the work and the details are worth it.

Washington's paintings in the back continued the creepy vibe and I was particularly attracted to the textures she created for her backgrounds. They read as a velveteen wallpaper against her strikingly flat vampire figures and provide a sense of depth. If you find yourself downtown in the next couple of weeks, stop by this hidden gem before the show closes at the end of the month.

Alex Lukas at Breeze Block Gallery, Portland
Written by Trippe
Thursday, 16 January 2014 11:22

PORTLAND --- Chicago based Alex Lukas is now showing new work in the show Prints & Photographs; Copies & Concrete (PHOTOS) at Breeze Block Gallery. Alex has shown with Guerrero Gallery here in SF a couple times and we've featured his work many times... like HERE HERE and HERE.

His last show with Richard Coleman was beautiful.

Alex Lukas in front of his works.

In addition to his painting and drawing practice, Lukas is self-taught printmaker with a background in ‘zine publishing and non-traditional use of print media. For this exhibition he will present several new editions, a new artists’ book, diazotypes, sculptures, offset lithographs and unique works based in printmaking as parts of an ambitious installation at the gallery. Eschewing the concept of using print merely as a means of reproducing an already existing image, all of the work presented here is unique to it’s medium.

Alex Lukas’ highly detailed works on paper and intricate artists’ books examine a possible future of destruction and violence, coupled with rebirth and a quiet sense of optimism, alongside an examination of the contemporary landscape.

I don't think at this point it needs to be written since the last update to Fecal Face was a long time ago, but...

I, John Trippe, have put this baby Fecal Face to bed. I'm now focusing my efforts on running ECommerce at DLX which I'm very excited about... I guess you can't take skateboarding out of a skateboarder.

It was a great 15 years, and most of that effort can still be found within the site. Click around. There's a lot of content to explore.

Hit me up if you have any ECommerce related questions. - trippe.io

I'm not sure how many people are lucky enough to have The San Francisco Giants 3 World Series trophies put on display at their work for the company's employees to enjoy during their lunch break, but that's what happened the other day at Deluxe. So great.

The Death of the Artist—and the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:34

When works of art become commodities and nothing else, when every endeavor becomes “creative” and everybody “a creative,” then art sinks back to craft and artists back to artisans—a word that, in its adjectival form, at least, is newly popular again. Artisanal pickles, artisanal poems: what’s the difference, after all? So “art” itself may disappear: art as Art, that old high thing. Which—unless, like me, you think we need a vessel for our inner life—is nothing much to mourn.

Hard-working artisan, solitary genius, credentialed professional—the image of the artist has changed radically over the centuries. What if the latest model to emerge means the end of art as we have known it? --continue reading

NYPD told to carry spray paint to cover graffiti
Wednesday, 21 May 2014 10:37

nyc_graffitiNYC --- A new graffiti abatement program put forth by the police commissioner has beat cops carrying cans of spray paint to fill in and cover graffiti artists work in an effort to clean up the city --> Many cops are thinking it's a waste of resources, but we're waiting to see someone make a project of it. Maybe instructions for the cops on where to fill-in?

The NYPD is arming its cops with cans of spray paint and giving them art-class-style lessons to tackle the scourge of urban graffiti, The Post has learned.

Shootings are on the rise across the city, but the directive from Police Headquarters is to hunt down street art and cover it with black, red and white spray paint, sources said... READ ON

Alison Blickle @NYC's Kravets Wehby Gallery

Los Angeles based Alison Blickle who showed here in San Francisco at Eleanor Harwood last year (PHOTOS) recently showed new paintings in New York at Kravets Wehby Gallery. Lovely works.

Interview w/ Kevin Earl Taylor

We haven't been featuring many interviews as of late. Let's change that up as we check in with a few local San Francisco artists like Kevin Earl Taylor here whom we studio visited back in 2009 (PHOTOS & VIDEO). It's been awhile, Kevin...

Peter Gronquist @The Shooting Gallery

If you like guns and boobs, head on over to the Shooting Gallery; just don't expect the work to be all cheap ploys and hot chicks. With Make Stuff by Peter Gronquist (Portland) in the main space and Morgan Slade's Snake in the Eagle's Shadow in the project space, there is plenty spectacle to be had, but if you look just beyond it, you might actually get something out of the shows.

Jay Bo at Hamburg's Circle Culture

Berlin based Jay Bo recently held a solo show at Hamburg's Circle Culture featuring some of his most recent paintings. We lvoe his work.

NYCHOS @Fifty24SF

Fifty24SF opened Street Anatomy, a new solo show by Austrian artist Nychos a week ago last Friday night. He's been steadily filling our city with murals over the last year, with one downtown on Geary St. last summer, and new ones both in the Haight and in Oakland within the last few weeks, but it was really great to see his work up close and in such detail.

Gator Skater +video

Nate Milton emailed over this great short Gator Skater which is a follow-up to his Dog Skateboard he emailed to us back in 2011... Any relation to this Gator Skater?

In a filmmaker's thinking, we wish more videos were done in this style. Too much editing and music with a lacking in actual content. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

AJ Fosik in Tokyo at The Hellion Gallery

Matt Wagner recently emailed over some photos from The Hellion Gallery in Tokyo, who recently put together a show with AJ Fosik (Portland) called Beast From a Foreign Land. The gallery gave twelve of Fosik's sculptures to twelve Japanese artists (including Hiro Kurata who is currently showing in our group show Salt the Skies) to paint, burn, or build upon.

GOLD BLOOD, MAGIC WEIRDOS

Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne played host to a huge group exhibition a couple of weeks back, with "Gold Blood, Magic Weirdos" Curated by Melbourne artist Sean Morris. Gold Blood brought together 25 talented painters, illustrators and comic artists from Australia, the US, Singapore, England, France and Spain - and marked the end of the Magic Weirdos trilogy, following shows in Perth in 2012 and London in 2013.

Jeremy Fish at LA's Mark Moore Gallery

San Francisco based Fecal Pal Jeremy Fish opened his latest solo show Hunting Trophies at LA's Mark Moore Gallery last week to massive crowds and cabin walls lined with imagery pertaining to modern conquest and obsession.

John Felix Arnold III on the Road to NYC

Well, John Felix Arnold III is at it again. This time, he and Carolyn LeBourgios packed an entire show into the back of a Prius and drove across the country to install it at Superchief Gallery in NYC. I met with him last week as he told me about the trip over delicious burritos at Taqueria Cancun (which is right across the street from FFDG and serves what I think is the best burrito in the city) as the self proclaimed "Only overweight artist in the game" spilled all the details.

FRENCH in Melbourne

London based illustrator FRENCH recently held a show of new works at the Melbourne based Mild Manners

Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF

Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Mario Wagner @Hashimoto

Mario Wagner (Berkeley) opened his new solo show A Glow that Transfers Creativity last Saturday night at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art

The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

NYCHOS Mural on Ashbury and Haight

NYCHOS completed this great new mural on the corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco on Tuesday. Looks Amazing.

Sun Milk in Vienna

With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Inspired by the many historical artists who have longed similar longings I discovered the beauty of artist residencies. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding

"How To Lose Yourself Completely" by Bryan Schnelle

I just wanted to share with you a piece I recently finished which took me 4 years to complete. Titled "How To Lose Yourself Completely (The September Issue)", it consists of a copy of the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine (the issue they made the documentary about) with all faces masked with a sharpie, and everything else entirely whited out. 840 pages of fun. -Bryan Schnelle

Jeremy Fish Solo Show in Los Angeles

Jeremy Fish opens Hunting Trophies tonight, Saturday April 5th, at the Los Angeles based Mark Moore Gallery. The show features new work from Fish inside the "hunting lodge" where viewers climb inside the head of the hunter and explore the history of all the animals he's killed.

The Albatross and the Shipping Container

Beautiful piece entitled "The Albatross and the Shipping Container", Ink on Paper, Mounted to Panel, 47" Diameter, by San Francisco based Martin Machado now on display at FFDG. Stop in Saturday (1-6pm) to view the group show "Salt the Skies" now running through April 19th. 2277 Mission St. at 19th.

The Marsh Barge - Traveling the Mississippi River from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to quit my job, move out of my house, leave everything and travel again. So on August 21, 2013 I pushed a canoe packed full of gear into the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, along with four of my best friends. Exactly 100 days later, I arrived at a marina near the Gulf of Mexico in a sailboat.
